Legal is the class of post for legal documents. It is always signed for and handled confidentially.
Legal post is confidential. It is always signed for, and details of it are only disclosed under lawful authority or with the sender's or recipient's consent (Kings Mail and National Addressing Act 2026, s.4B(a)).
What Legal post is for
Use Legal post for documents such as court papers, contracts, and letters from solicitors and public bodies where you need proof of delivery and confidential handling.
How to send it
- Address the envelope in the usual way. See how to address your post.
- Take it to the counter of any post office. Legal post can't be put in a post box.
- Choose Legal 1, 2 or 3 and pay. See Legal prices.
- Keep your receipt. It has the reference you need if you have a question about the item.
When it's delivered
Legal post is only handed over when someone signs for it. If nobody is in, a card tells them where to collect it.
Confidentiality
Kings Mail staff only discuss Legal post with people who need to know. We don't give out details of it unless there is lawful authority to do so, or the sender or recipient has agreed.
